Snake Wallahs

Snake Wallahs began when Claire and Julian Taylor won the tender for an art commission for the 2013 Mega Mela Festival in Manchester, funded by the Arts Council. They made Giant Cobra Snake and a Snake Charmer Puppet. They designed them together and then worked with a team of artists to produce them.

The snake is 15 metres long and needs 10 puppeteers to operate it. The body is made from a variety of materials and is covered in Saris

charmer charmer

The Charmer is simple by design, with his features suspended from a scaffold tower. There is enough information for his character to be suggested and enough space for your imagination to take over. There is a simple, playful narrative between the Snake and Charmer which can be repeated a number of times at an event

Since the Snake was made it has been to a number of Festivals including Glastonbury, Green Man and Shambala. Here is a short film of it at Shambala in 2015.

With thanks to the team; Kirsti Davies for input in the original tender and artists Helen Davies, Tony Cairnes, Becky Bryson, Colin and Ruta working on the fabrication and our great LIPA student volunteer Rosie.

Also thanks to our many Snake Wallahs who did a fantastic job operating the Snake and Charmer during the heatwave in Manchester at the Mega Mela.
